Sri Dalada Delgamuwa Vihara

"The Historical Ancient Temple of Sri Dalada Delgamuwa Vihara "

"Ekha datha Thidasa Pure"
    Eka Naga Pure Ahu
Ekha Gandhara Visaye
    Ekhasi puna Seehale

                         According to the above mentioned reputed stanza(Gatha) in which mentions the four main sacred Tooth Relics of Lanka. It is our lord Buddha's left sacred Tooth Relic.
                              After cessation of the lord Buddha, this sacred Tooth Relic was secretly taken by one Arahath Khema from the sandun pire on the occasion of the cremation of the Lord Buddha and offered to the king Bambadath in the city of Benarese for worshiping.
                              Since then,consecutively, by the 3rd century A.D, this sacred Tooth relic belonged to the king, Guhaseeha, the king of Kalingurata in Danthapura. In that occasion, when another king called Kshieradhara declared war claiming for the sacred Tooth Relic from the king Guhaseeha, he handed over the sacred Tooth Relic to his daughter, Hemamala and his Son-in-law, the price Dantha and dispatched to Sri Lanka.

       By then, Sri Lanka was reigned by the king called Siri Megawarna aliasSirimewan. (In 3rd Century). That king accepted the Tooth Relic with great honour, did the necessary offerings and homage and held the procession with grandeur etc.

                       hence, the royal empowerment and the inheritance of the kingdom of Sri Lanka was exerted by the arrival of the sacred Tooth Relic which was protected with great effort made by our kings. They constructed a specific royal palace with royal security for keeping the sacred Tooth Relic within the capital and looked after by offerings necessary Poojas thrice a day.

                                Because of having the inheritance to sacred Tooth Relic, the south Indian invaders and same as all the other invaders who attempted to capture the sacred Sri Dala(Tooth Relic ) too. Consequently, our ancient kings took  the sacred Tooth Relic from kingdom to kingdom and protected it with great care.

                            Accordingly, after the kingdoms of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Kurunegala, Yapahuwa, Gampola etc., when Portuguese arrived Sri Lanka in the 15th century, the Kingdom, the administrative centre was established  in Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte(1412).

                                          The catholic Christians, the Portuguese who had western white origin, had two objectives. They were the expansion of their Catholic Christian Cross religion within the dependencies exporting the resources of spices like cinnamon to their countries. They activated brutally to achieve their aspirations within our country.

                  During the period of carrying the sacred Tooth Relic to the Delgamuwa temple the king, Buwanakabahu,(vii) had reigned the kingdom of Kotte. He had only a daughter, but no son. His daughter, Samudradevi whose son was the price Dharmapala, was compelled by the Portuguese to write a compromising agreement to assign the kingship to prince Dharmapala from the king. After achieving their aspiration, they began to destroy the Buddhist temples, torturing the Buddhist monks and harassing Buddhist people, they built their Catholic churches. Amongst, once the Portuguese plotted to rob the Dala Maligawa in Kotte and stolen the sacred Tooth Relic.By that time, the post of Diyawadana Nilame or the guardian of the sacred Tooth Relic was presided by Keerawella Hiripitiya Diyawadana Nilame, a prince who had been descended from a high cast of prince Dantha. In the night, on the day when the Portuguese conspired while he was sleeping, it is said that an old man who attired in white clothes with a turban appeared and said like this;
"Kotte Kalale Kisille Datha Medagan Rale" which means Diyawadana Rale is now no use of describe to Kotte, there is no goal to reach. Take "Datha" or the sacred Tooth relic to the mid of the country".
